Grady Booch is best known as a key figure in the software development community. He is recognized internationally for his work to improve the art and science of software development.
Twenty years ago, he and many others developed a precursor of the OMG Unified Modeling Language® (UML®) standard. In the video, Grady describes the “grand journey” that led to the standard notation, semantics and meta-model that later became codified as the OMG® UML standard.
Years later, Grady takes stock at how pervasive UML is in modeling air traffic control systems, defense systems and a variety of transportation, financial and health systems. I can attest to that because UML has dozens of implementations from commercial products to open source projects, and an ecosystem of products, consultants, books, training as well as our own OMG UML certification program, the OMG Certified UML Professional 2 (OCUP 2™). And it continues to evolve and improve. Like all OMG standards, it is available for free download from the OMG website. UML is also formally published as an ISO/IEC Standard.
Looking ahead, Grady sees a sea change coming in software engineering. Because UML resulted from an effort by a lot of people, he hopes that today’s developers will take the same initiative that he and many others did to evolve future software systems.
